Newsletter February -  2010

Our first meeting of 2010 was off to a good start with Burn’s night.  Margo set the mood with a  Burn’s favourite Ae Fond Kiss. Members chose what they wanted to paint and half way through Margo sang again [by special request]. Bill piped in the haggis in great style with our own Poosie Nancy [Margo to you and me] carrying in the haggis before Bert addressed it with great flourish and then we all enjoyed the mini supper. It never ceases to surprise me the variety of paintings we achieve from the same subject and Burn’s night was no exception.
Thanks to all who shopped, cooked, served and washed up and a special thank you to Bill, Margo and Bert for setting the mood for us.

Tuition on 27th   Angie showed us how to set about painting from our photographs taking account of the composition and focal points. Angie also demonstrated how we can use more than one photograph to achieve this.

On the 3rd Gerry  once again Gerry did not disappoint. He showed how he chooses wood, how he looks at it before he starts painting on it and he also showed work of very different artists. Then, from a bag [a big bag] he brings out an impressive selection of wood  -  all different sizes and shapes and invited us to ‘have a go’. What a fantastic variety of paintings we had at the end of a very enjoyable night. Thank you Gerry we all enjoyed it.

Wendy Sabine on the 10th.  Wendy brought with her a variety of her completed work. Pendants made from slices of agate, encased in silver [some of them the size of a 10p piece] with her tiny miniature paintings on them They were exquisite. Wendy explained and then demonstrated her methods on agate and a variety of materials. A very impressive and enjoyable evening.

Thursday afternoon sessions are underway.
On the 4th   The first one saw us painting a picture in colour from a black and white copy of one of Hunter’s paintings of Drumeldrie. Again a good variety of work all from the same painting and compared fairly well with the original.
On the 11th Harry  paints miniatures of birds [ and other animals] and paints on wood [as well as feathers] so what a great follow on this was  from Gerry and Wendy. Harry had a variety of wood already prepared for us and a selection of birds for us to copy. He demonstrated how we could start and then let us loose. Within minutes the hall was silent with concentration. At the end of the afternoon we had a lovely selection of bird paintings. A great afternoon. Thank you Harry.

On Wednesday evening the 17th    we will be attempting to paint our own miniatures. Please bring whatever media and subject you would prefer to work with.  If you would rather do something other than miniatures then please do whatever you choose

Tuition on the24th will see us painting from our photographs using a limited palette. This should be interesting

On the 3rd March     John will be giving us a demonstration on oil painting. John always gives a good demonstration , not to be missed
On the 10th  The Rolf Harris night has proved to be a popular event in our programme and usually very enjoyable, please bring Acrylics and we will supply the paper.

The Thursday afternoon sessions

On the 18th we will be looking at some of the many different ways to start an abstract
On the 25th  Bill will be showing us how to paint trees in watercolour. Please bring paper, watercolour and photographs of trees.

Reminder   Could I please have names for the Mixed Media Workshop on 6th March

Quotes   While Gerry was waiting for the club to start one night he was admiring the children’s work on walls and was reminded of a quote by Picasso “ Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist when he/she grows up”
Another quote from Henry Moore “ There is no retirement for an artist, it is your way of living so there is no end to it”
Thanks Gerry….more?
